Liposuction (also called lipoplasty or liposculpture) is a surgical procedure that removes fat from specific areas of the body through small incisions using a thin hollow tube called a cannula. Common areas include the abdomen, flanks (love handles), hips, thighs, back, upper arms, chin and neck. It is designed for people who are close to their target weight but have isolated pockets of fat that resist diet and exercise, often because of genetics or body shape.

Good candidates are adults at or near a stable, healthy weight (generally within about 30 percent of their ideal weight) with localised, diet-resistant fat, good skin elasticity, firm muscle tone and realistic expectations. Non-smokers, or those willing to stop smoking for several weeks before and after surgery, heal far better. Liposuction is not suitable as a weight-loss solution, for people with significant obesity, for those with marked loose or sagging skin who would be better served by a tummy tuck or body lift, or for anyone with poorly controlled diabetes, heart disease, clotting disorders or other conditions that make surgery unsafe.
