Gynecomastia surgery is the most reliable, long-lasting way to correct enlarged male breasts when diet and exercise have not worked, because true gland tissue does not respond to weight loss. Gynecomastia is the medical term for enlarged breast tissue in men. It can be caused by an excess of firm glandular tissue behind the nipple, by fatty tissue (sometimes called pseudo-gynecomastia or lipomastia), or by a combination of both. It is extremely common, affecting a significant proportion of men at some point in life, and is usually benign and hormonal in origin, though it can also follow significant weight changes, certain medications, anabolic steroid use, or be idiopathic with no identifiable cause.

Gynecomastia surgery (also called male breast reduction) removes this excess tissue to flatten and reshape the chest. Good candidates are adult men in reasonable health whose breast enlargement has been stable for at least several months to a year, who are at or near a stable weight, and who have realistic expectations. Surgery is most predictable for true glandular or mixed gynecomastia that has not responded to lifestyle changes. You are generally not a suitable candidate if your gynecomastia is very recent and still evolving, if it may be caused by a medication or anabolic steroids that have not yet been stopped and reviewed, or by an untreated hormonal or medical condition that should be investigated first. Most men feel sore and tight rather than in severe pain for the first few days, with discomfort well controlled by simple painkillers. You will wear a compression vest continuously for about four to six weeks to control swelling, support the skin and help the chest settle into its new shape.
