IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) in Turkey

A simple, low-cost first-line fertility treatment that places prepared sperm directly into the uterus around ovulation, with no surgery and no downtime.

Overview

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is one of the least invasive and most affordable fertility treatments, and it is widely available at accredited reproductive clinics in Turkey from around £450 per cycle. It involves placing washed, concentrated sperm directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation, often combined with gentle ovarian stimulation. For international patients with unexplained or mild infertility, IUI is frequently the sensible first step before considering IVF. Note that Turkish law permits IUI only with the partner's own sperm, as donor gametes are not legal in Turkey.

IUI, also called artificial insemination, is a fertility procedure in which a prepared sample of your partner's sperm is placed high inside the uterus, close to the egg, using a thin soft catheter. The aim is to shorten the journey the sperm must make and increase the number of healthy, motile sperm reaching the fallopian tubes at the right moment in the cycle. It is far less invasive and considerably cheaper than IVF, and is often recommended as a first-line treatment.

IUI can be done in a natural cycle (tracking your own ovulation) or, more commonly, with mild ovarian stimulation using tablets such as letrozole or clomiphene, or low-dose injectable hormones, to encourage one or two mature follicles. Because Turkey does not permit donor sperm or egg programmes, IUI in Turkish clinics is performed exclusively with the partner's sperm, which makes it best suited to married heterosexual couples.

How it’s done

A typical IUI cycle begins on day 2-3 of your period with a baseline ultrasound and, in stimulated cycles, the start of fertility tablets or low-dose injections. Over the following days, monitoring scans track follicle growth until one or two follicles reach maturity. A trigger injection (hCG) is then given to release the egg at a precise time, usually around 36 hours before insemination.

On the day of the procedure, the partner provides a fresh semen sample, which the laboratory washes and concentrates to isolate the most active sperm. Using a speculum, the doctor passes a fine, flexible catheter through the cervix and gently deposits the prepared sperm into the uterine cavity. The insemination itself takes only a few minutes, is usually painless, requires no anaesthetic, and you rest briefly before going home. A pregnancy blood test follows about two weeks later.

  • Washed sperm placed directly into the uterus around ovulation
  • Minimally invasive, same-day procedure with no anaesthetic
  • Best suited to married couples with mild or unexplained infertility
  • Often a lower-cost first step before IVF
  • Performed only with the partner's sperm under Turkish law

Your journey, step by step

  1. 01

    Remote consultation and review

Unal arranges a video consultation with a partner clinic where a fertility specialist reviews your history, previous tests, semen analysis and any scans to confirm IUI is appropriate for you.

  2. 02

    Cycle planning and stimulation

Your cycle is timed around your period. If stimulation is used, you start tablets or low-dose injections at home, often before you travel, under the clinic's guidance.

  3. 03

    Monitoring scans in Turkey

You travel for the key part of the cycle. Ultrasound scans track follicle development and the lining of the womb so the team can pinpoint the optimal day.

  4. 04

    Trigger and insemination

A trigger injection sets ovulation timing. Around 36 hours later the prepared sperm is placed into the uterus in a short, painless outpatient procedure.

  5. 05

    Two-week wait and test

You return home the same day or shortly after. A pregnancy blood test is taken roughly 14 days later, with the clinic and Unal staying in contact throughout.

Is it right for you?

IUI suits married heterosexual couples with unexplained infertility, mild male-factor issues (slightly reduced sperm count or motility), cervical or ovulation problems, or mild endometriosis, where the woman has at least one open, healthy fallopian tube and a good ovarian reserve. It tends to work best for women under 38 who have been trying for a relatively short time. IUI is generally not the right choice if both fallopian tubes are blocked, if there is severe male-factor infertility, significant endometriosis, advanced maternal age with low ovarian reserve, or after several failed IUI attempts, in which case IVF is usually the more effective route. Because Turkish law does not allow donor gametes, IUI in Turkey is not available to single women, same-sex couples, or anyone needing donor sperm.

Benefits

  • Far more affordable than IVF, from around £450 per cycle
  • Minimally invasive with no surgery, anaesthetic or egg retrieval
  • Same-day procedure with no recovery time or downtime
  • A sensible, lower-cost first-line step before considering IVF
  • Closer to natural conception than more intensive treatments
  • Can be combined with gentle stimulation to improve timing and odds

Recovery & aftercare

There is essentially no recovery period. The insemination takes only a few minutes, after which most women rest for 10-15 minutes and then carry on with their normal day, including light activity, work and travel. Some women notice mild cramping similar to period pain or a little spotting for a short while afterwards, which is normal and settles quickly.

You can usually fly home the same day or the day after, which is why a stay of three to five days comfortably covers the monitoring scans and the procedure itself. The clinic will advise on any prescribed progesterone support and on when to take the pregnancy test. There are no stitches, dressings or physical restrictions, although your doctor may suggest avoiding strenuous exercise during the two-week wait.

Results to expect

Realistically, IUI success is modest per cycle, typically in the region of 10-20% depending on your age, the cause of infertility, sperm quality and whether stimulation is used. Younger women with unexplained infertility tend to sit at the higher end of that range. Because each individual cycle has a limited chance, many couples plan for up to three to six cycles, with the cumulative chance of pregnancy rising over several attempts. No clinic can guarantee a pregnancy, and a responsible specialist will be honest if your particular situation means IVF would give you a meaningfully better chance from the outset.

Safety & honest risks

IUI is very safe, but no fertility treatment is risk-free. The main consideration is a higher chance of twins or multiple pregnancy when ovarian stimulation is used, which is why clinics keep doses low and cancel or convert the cycle if too many follicles develop. With stimulation there is also a small risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), though this is uncommon and usually mild with the gentle protocols used for IUI. Mild cramping, light spotting and a small risk of pelvic infection can occur, and there is always the emotional disappointment of an unsuccessful cycle. Good clinics mitigate these risks through careful monitoring, conservative stimulation, strict laboratory standards and clear counselling before you start.

Why Turkey, with Unal

Turkey offers internationally accredited fertility clinics and experienced embryologists at a fraction of UK or US prices, with a single IUI cycle starting from around £450 compared with often two to three times that privately in the UK. Unal Cakar is an independent health-tourism facilitator and patient advocate, not a clinic: he vets and coordinates accredited partner hospitals, arranges your consultations, scans and travel logistics, and stays in contact throughout your cycle. You pay the clinic directly for your treatment and never pay Unal a treatment fee, as his role is sponsored by the vetted partner hospitals, keeping his guidance independent and focused on your care.

How I coordinate your iui (intrauterine insemination)

I match you to a vetted, accredited surgeon who specialises in this procedure, agree an itemised all-inclusive price and written guarantees before you book, and stay reachable through your treatment and aftercare back home. You only ever pay the clinic — never me.

Frequently asked

How much does IUI cost in Turkey?

A single IUI cycle in Turkey typically starts from around £450, depending on the clinic and whether ovarian stimulation and monitoring scans are included. This is considerably less than private IUI in the UK or US. Medication for stimulated cycles is usually an additional cost, and your clinic will give you a clear written breakdown before you start.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey for IUI?

Most patients stay three to five days. This window covers the monitoring ultrasound scans needed to time ovulation accurately and the insemination itself. The procedure is same-day with no downtime, so you can usually travel home the same day or the day after.

Is IUI painful?

No, IUI is usually painless and takes only a few minutes. It feels similar to a smear test or cervical screening, with some women noticing mild cramping during or shortly after. No anaesthetic is needed, and you rest only briefly before leaving the clinic.

What is the success rate of IUI?

IUI success is modest per cycle, typically around 10-20%, and depends heavily on your age, the cause of infertility and sperm quality. Younger women with unexplained infertility are at the higher end. Because each cycle has a limited chance, many couples plan for several cycles, and no clinic can ethically guarantee a pregnancy.

Can I use donor sperm for IUI in Turkey?

No. Turkish law does not permit donor sperm, donor eggs or any third-party reproduction, so IUI in Turkey is performed only with the partner's own sperm. This means IUI in Turkey is suited to married heterosexual couples. If you need donor sperm, IUI in Turkey is not an option.

How is IUI different from IVF?

IUI simply places prepared sperm into the uterus so fertilisation happens naturally inside the body, while IVF fertilises eggs with sperm in a laboratory and transfers an embryo. IUI is much cheaper, less invasive and involves no egg retrieval, but has lower per-cycle success. IVF is usually recommended if IUI fails or for more complex fertility problems.

How many IUI cycles should I try before considering IVF?

Many specialists suggest trying up to three to six IUI cycles before moving to IVF, as the cumulative chance of success rises over several attempts. The right number depends on your age and diagnosis. A responsible doctor will recommend switching to IVF sooner if your situation means it would give a meaningfully better chance.
