A fertility assessment (also called a fertility check-up or fertility workup) is a diagnostic evaluation, not a treatment. Its purpose is to measure the key factors that affect your chance of conceiving — egg quantity and quality, hormone balance, ovulation, the womb and fallopian tubes in women, and sperm count, movement and shape in men — and to identify any treatable causes of delay. It does not get you pregnant; it tells you where you stand and what, if anything, is standing in the way.

For couples, both partners are tested, because in roughly a third of cases the main factor is female, a third male, and the rest a combination or unexplained. The assessment ends with a face-to-face explanation of your results and a plan, which may be reassurance and timed natural conception, lifestyle changes, ovulation induction, IUI, IVF/ICSI, or referral for a specific issue.

The ultrasound examines the uterus and ovaries for fibroids, polyps, cysts or polycystic ovaries. If tubal blockage is suspected, a hysterosalpingography (HSG) or HyCoSy may be added to confirm the fallopian tubes are open.

For men the central test is a semen analysis (spermiogram), which measures sperm concentration, motility and morphology after 2-5 days of abstinence; it is sometimes repeated for accuracy and supported by hormone tests if results are abnormal. Both partners may also be offered baseline infection and general-health screening. A fertility assessment suits couples who have been trying to conceive for 12 months without success (or 6 months if the woman is over 35), anyone with irregular or absent periods, known conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, or previous pelvic surgery or infection, men with a history of testicular problems, and individuals or couples who simply want to understand their fertility before trying or before egg or sperm freezing. It is also sensible before planning treatment abroad.
