The septum is the wall of cartilage and bone that divides the inside of the nose into two passages. When it is bent or buckled — a "deviated septum," often present from birth or following a knock to the nose — one or both airways narrow, making it hard to breathe through the nose, especially at night or during exercise. Septoplasty is the operation that straightens this wall and returns it to the midline.

Septoplasty suits adults with a confirmed deviated septum whose nasal blockage has not improved with sprays, antihistamines or other medical treatment, and who struggle to breathe through the nose, snore, sleep poorly or get repeated sinus infections because of it. It is generally not advised for purely cosmetic concerns (that is rhinoplasty), nor usually for teenagers whose facial growth is incomplete (typically waiting until around 17-18). People with uncontrolled bleeding disorders, untreated high blood pressure, or who take blood thinners may need optimisation first, and heavy smokers are asked to stop before and after surgery to protect healing. Expect your nose to feel blocked, stuffy and a little tender for the first one to two weeks — this is swelling and crusting, not a failed operation, and it eases steadily. Internal splints, if used, are removed around day 5-7. Light blood-tinged discharge for a few days is normal. You should avoid blowing your nose, heavy lifting, bending and strenuous exercise for about two weeks, sleep with your head slightly raised, and use the saline sprays or rinses your surgeon recommends to keep the airway clean.
