How it’s done

During the procedure you are under general anaesthetic. The surgeon makes a few incisions, usually around 0.8–2 cm, and the abdomen is gently inflated with carbon-dioxide gas to create working space. Thin tubes (ports) are placed, and the robotic arms — carrying the camera and instruments — are docked to them. From the console, the surgeon views a magnified, three-dimensional image and operates wristed instruments that bend and rotate beyond the range of the human wrist. The system filters out natural hand tremor and scales large hand movements into tiny, exact ones.

A trained bedside team and an assistant surgeon remain scrubbed at the operating table throughout, changing instruments and assisting. When the operation is complete the instruments are removed and the small incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures or surgical glue, usually leaving only modest scars. Is it right for you?
