Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin (prepuce), the retractable fold of skin that covers the head (glans) of the penis. After the procedure the glans is permanently exposed. Most healthy adult men and boys are suitable candidates, whether the reason is medical (phimosis, recurrent balanitis, paraphimosis, tight frenulum, recurrent urinary infections, or lichen sclerosus) or personal, hygiene, cultural or religious. Most adults feel sore and swollen for the first few days, which is well controlled with simple pain relief; many return to desk-based work and light activity within 3-7 days.
